Fantasy has long ruled the day in YA speculative fiction, but a wave of diverse sci-fi authors is charting new territory. From grounded dystopian work to out-of-this-world space opera, the appeal of science fiction for young readers—as well as how to introduce a genre that some students may view as intimidating—will be discussed by a panel of YA sci-fi authors.

Teachers attend roundtables with several different authors to sample workshops with tools to bring into their own classrooms. Topics include creating your own dystopian world, creating stories with theme, developing unique character voice, building tension in story using character arcs to drive romance, and using cross-curricular concepts to foster creativity.
